Ignorance on any law is not an immunity

“Ignorantia juris non excusat” means “ignorance of the law is no excuse.” This principle implies that a person cannot escape liability or punishment for violating the law simply because they were unaware of its existence or did not know that their actions were illegal.

In the legal system of Bangladesh, Article 21 of the Constitution states that it is the duty of every citizen to observe the Constitution and the laws, to maintain discipline, to perform public duties and to protect public property.

Every individual is therefore expected to be aware of the laws applicable to them. Specific defenses and exceptions depend on the facts and legal context of an individual case.
