Ignorance on any law is not an immunity

"Ignorantia juris non excusat" means "ignorance of the law is no excuse." This principle implies that a person cannot escape liability or punishment for violating the law simply because they were unaware of its existence or did not know that their actions were illegal. This concept is fundamental to many legal systems around the world, including Bangladesh Legal System.

In the legal system of Bangladesh, it is generally mentioned explicitly but implicitly understood in the legal framework. Article 21 of the Constitution of Bangladesh states that, it is the duty of every citizen to observe the Constitution and the laws, to maintain discipline, to perform public duties and to protect public property.

Therefore, every individual is expected to be aware of the laws applicable to them, and lack of knowledge about the law does not provide a defense. There are some exceptions or nuances in specific cases. For example, in some situations, a defendant may argue that they had a reasonable belief that their actions were lawful or that they relied on incorrect information provided by authorities. However, such defenses are typically considered on a case-by-case basis.
